"THE NEW ZEALANDERS"

The qolden kowhai may discard its bloom And rata blossom fall at season's end. The leaning stars may fade behind the moon And rivers cease to flow where oceans blend. Yet, in our hearts, their deeds will still remain, Unchanging in their glory through the years. Our brave, undaunted boys, whose fearless name Shall light the sanctuary of noble spheres. Their song of battle, rising clear and strong, May waver into emptiness and space, 'Midst desolation it will linger long. And yet in triumph, find immortal place. For theirs is valour far surpassing dreams, And simple words are humble, useless things To honour them who give in flowing stvcQiyis Their life-blood, with the courage born of kings. They shall be known through the ages yet, A lasting tribute to New Zealand's name, Whose sons, through generations, shall beget The shining glory of their fathers' fame. Were we possessed of poet's magic pen We could immortalise the tears and joys That swell our hearts, each time we think of them— Born of the kauri land, our gallant boys. „ „ Mavis E. Hills.
