COMPETITION RESULTS
Entries for the painting competition were quite good, though there were few outstanding efforts and less originality than usual was shown in mounting the pictures. The chief fault of a number of competitors was in using too many bright colour.'-. It is much better, for example, to make the socks and hair ribbon of one colour and the frock of another than to use three different shades — all bright! In the same way, the boy does not look natural if he has a red tie, blue trousers, green sweater and yellow shirt! It also helps if some sort of background, not necessarily elaborate — it may be only a faint colour or a few lines —is painted in. It gives a more solid effect. Remember those artistic points, boys and girls, and try to make your pictures as true to life as possible. Easily the best entry came from Pamela Greenfield, Mission Bay, aged 13, who wins the half-crown prize in the 12 and over section. Her picture was attractively shaded and gave an altogether realistic effect, with the figures standing out from the background. The winner of the under 12's, Ruve Mellsop, Epsom, also produced an original effort, being the only contributor who gave her subjects a spotted frock and a striped shirt! The painting was well done for a nine-year-old. Twenty-five two-point certificates will be sent out for the next best entries.
