BRIGADIER J. T. BURROWS

DISTINGUISHED ALL BLACK

P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday

"The All Black brigadier referred to in a recent cabled message from the N.Z.E.F. official war correspondent is Brigadier J. T. Burrows," said the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, to-day. "Brigadier Burrows, who went overseas with the First Echelon in the rank of captain, has proved himself a capable officer and well f|ualified fcr the high command he now holds. He was mentioned in dispatches in April this year for distinguished services in the Middle East."

Brigadier Burrows is a former New Zealand and Canterbury Rugby representaitve. He went to South Africa with the 1928 New Zealand team. Upon the outbreak of war Brigadier Burrows was appointed captain in a South Island battalion

and became temporary major commanding a company shortly afterward. He was in temporary command of a battalion during May, 1941, with the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel, and after a short period as officer commanding the southern infantry training depot was in December last again appointed to command his old battalion. At the same time his temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel was made substantive.

Shortly after the beginning of the present operations Brigadier Burrows was appointed to command a brigade when the brigade commander was wounded.

An old boy of the Christchurch Boys' High School, Brigadier Burrows, who was a master of arts, was a master there before going overseas. He was a New Zealand University Rugby blue and a Canterbury and All Black selector.

Brigadier Burrows commanded the force of New Zealanders which made an attack on Ruweisat Ridge last week.
