THEFT OF WALLET
SEQUEL TO FRACAS GAOLi FOR MAORI SOLiDIER (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. The sequel to a fracas in Whangarei 011 Monday evening, following which a Maori soldier, Rewiti Te Tapu, was convicted on charges of obscene language and wilful damage to a glass window, was heard in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court when Edward Kahui, aged 24, a Maori soldier, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour for the theft of a wallet valued at £1 containing £7 in money, the property of Te Tapu. Constable Davis produced a statement in which Kahui stated that he had been sick on leave and on Monday had returned from Auckland to Whangarei. He had been drinking in an hotel with several Maori soldiers, including Te Tapu. In the evening he had seen Te Tapu held by soldiers near a broken window, and while Te Tapu was struggling he had taken the wallet from Te Tapu's pocket. He was not used to drinking, which he blamed for the occurrence. Kahui, who belongs to Tuakau, pleaded guilty.
