TOLL OF SHIPPING

Allied Losses Reached Peak

Two Weeks Ago

Rec. 10.30 WASHINGTON, July 22

The War Shipping Administration announced that shipping losses during the week ended on Sunday last were the highest since the war began and that the sinkings of United Nations vessels have greatly exceeded new construction. It is declared that in order to counteract the effects of enemy action on marine casualties, shipping space in future will be reserved entirely for import and export cargoes essential to the prosecution of the war. It was emphasised, however, that essential military cargoes have not been left on piers because of lack of ships. Four more United Nations vessels, including the first Portuguese ship, have been destroyed in the Atlantic. A submarine shelled the latter vessel in broad daylight, although she was displaying prominently Portuguese colours. Eight survivors were landed. Two of the crew are dead and 34 are missing.
