FARMER FINED £30
FAILURE TO EXROL
A Pukekawa farmer, Handle Hugh Carroll, was fined £30 and costs in the Pukekohe Police Court yesterday by Messrs. J. Patterson and G. T. Parvin, J.P.'s, for failing to enrol in Class A of the First Division of the General Reserve. Defendant pleaded guilty.
Sergeant T. Kelly said Carroll was a single man, 40 years of age, who was content to carry on his dairy farm as if the country was enjoying peace, while his neighbours and other young men were overseas.
Counsel for defendant said shortly after the outbreak of the war Carroll offered his services in Auckland, and was told that as a dairy farmer he would be better employed on the land. He was one of those who believed that when he filled in the form of the Social Securitv register he had registered for the General Reserve.
The Bench, in imposing the fine, said Carroll was one of those who preferred their freedom while others were sacrificing their lives on the battlefields. It was a dastardly thing for a man to evade his militarv duties when the country needed his service.
