WASTE PAPER

SCHOOLS AS DEPOTS CO-OPERATION LACKING The value of waste paper collection can be ascertained by figures released by the Waste Reclamation Division of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council. Of £1687 which accrued to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Funds from waste reclamation during the year ended March 31, 1942, the North Auckland area, with headquarters at Whangarei, provided £132; the South Auckland area, with headquarters at Hamilton, £149; the Rotorua area, £3; the Western Bay of Plenty area, with headquarters at Tauranga, £6; the Thames area, £7; and the Ohinemuri area, £18. The Auckland metropolitan area provided £1372. Schools To Be Depots At the time of the "Weapons From Faste" Exhibition in April there was a collection of paper and other waste materials through the schools, states the Waste Reclamation Division. Transport difficulties prevented the making collections of waste paper from the schools a regular feature at that time, but it has now been arranged between the Metropolitan Waste Reclamation Committee, the Education Board, and the Headmasters' Association that there should be regular weekly collections from the schools of waste paper and certain other waste articles urgently required. In the meantime these collections are being confined to the larger schools on the south side of the Waitemata Harbour. Arrangements have been worked out with the assistance of a committee of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. It is expected that the encouragement given by these facilities and the recent regulations will greatly increase the amount of paper handled at the depot at 55, Customs Street East, through which there passed during the month of May 125 tons of paper, and during the month of June 99 tons of paper. The Metropolitan Waste Reclamation Committee is exploring the possibility of establishing depots other than at the schools in the suburban districts. Bought By Member It has been revealed by Dr. E. P. Neale, provincial supervisor of the reclamation of waste material, that, owing to lack of Government cooperation, the motor truck which is to be used to collect the waste paper from the various schools was purchased and refitted at the personal cost of a member of the reclamation committee. This truck is distributing bags to the schools this week, and will commence collecting the paper next week.
