VALUABLE PILOT

FLYING CROSS AWARDED

SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDER

(P A.) WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The citation accompanying the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Pilot-Officer Bruce Hamilton Hay, R.N.Z.A.F., of Auckland, says he has .completed a large number of operational sorties and intruder operations over enemy territory. He has destroyed four enemy aircraft, probably five, and damaged two others. "A valuable pilot and an inspiration to his colleagues, cool and skilful, he possesses marked courage and devotion to duty," the citation adds. Masterton Man's D.F.M. Sergeant Peter Masters Gawith, R.N.Z.A.F., has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. The citation says: "He has completed many day and night operations and has taken part in successful intruder operations against the enemy in Germany and German-occupied territory. He great keenness to engages; the enemy and has destroyed two airi; craft and damaged two others. By his courage and Initiative he sets an excellent 'example." Sergeant Gawith was born in Masterton in March, 1919, and educated at Nelson College. His father is Mr. A. Gawith, Longbush, Masterton.
