LIVING COSTS RISE
Position In Australia Since Start Of War CLOTHING UP 53.7 PER CENT Rec. 11.30 a.m. CANBERRA, this day. The cost of living in Australia has risen 17.9 per cent since the outbreak of war. The percentage of increases in the capital' cities are:—Sydney 17.5, Melbourne 18.7, Brisbane 17.8, Adelaide 18.6, Perth 16.5 Hobart 18.0. The cost of living has risen rapidly in the past 12 months because, at June 30, 1941, it was up only 9.2 on pre-war figures. Clothing is up 53.7 per cent, food 11.4, rents 9.0, miscellaneous items, including tobacco, household articles 14.4 per cent. The basic wage in all States will be increased next month as a result of the cost-of-living rise. The weekly increase in New South Wales, Victoria and West Australia will be 2/; in South Australia and Tasmania, 3/, and in Queensland 1/. The new basic rate will be: New South Wales, £4 15/; Victoria, £4 14/; South Australia, £4 11/; Tasmania, £4 11/; Queensland, £4 9/; and West Australia., £4 9/. -
