CITY RATES

ISSUE OF DEMANDS

NORMAL RESPONSE MADE

Officials of the treasury department of the Auckland City Council have sent out 19,000 rate demands to city ratepayers since the rates were struck by the council on July 10, and it is considered that by August 3, the full number of 32,000 will have been issued. Already £13,150 of city rates have been paid, and it is considered that this response is normal compared with other years. The penalty date for non-payment of rates is fixed by a statutory period of six months, plus fourteen days, from the time that the rate demand is sent out, and thus the first penalty date will be January 25 of next year, as a number of the rate demands were issued immediately the rates were struck.

The installation of modern plant in the city treasury department has enabled the staff to handle rate demands in an expeditious manner. In the days of hand-writing, a good effort by a staff member was to prepare 200 a day, whereas a machine can turn out 1100 a day.
