ON ROAD AND RAILWAYS ZONING OFFICER'S COMMENT j (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday. | After stressing the seriousness of ■ the tyre situation in New Zealand i in an address to businessmen at Petone. Mr. H. M. Christie. North : Island transport zoning officer, added that the strain on transport was not i only on road traffic, and something i would have to be done to relieve the i railways.
He instanced the ease of beer, stating that there were large companies with chains of hotels and beer was being transported from Auckland to the Bluff. At the same time other beer went from Dunedin to North Auckland. In addition there was two-way traffic for empties which had to return. There was no necessity for transport of that sort ar \ j 4 woulcl have to end. He had asked that powers be given to end that immediately.
