Hawera Trainers Prepare For New Season

(0.C.) HAWERA, Monday. Hawera trainers from now on will be concentrating on getting their charges ready for the opening of the season. Over 40 horses are in work on the tracks and many working round the roads are expected to start track work this week. Duncannon, which has shown improved form since coming to Hawera, will be our representative at the National meeting. He was narrowly beaten on Saturday at Marton, and will appreciate probable better track conditions next month at Riccarton. Battledress is doing everything that is required of him in a most satisfactory manner, and his appearance suggests him being in the pink of condition for early spring racing. iV _ A quartette that are to race as three-year-olds attract special attention on the training track. Clarice, by Solicitor-Gene-ral, Corday by Man's Pal, Peter's Choice bv Gynerium, and Manpower, by Mans Pal. all have been well done during the winter months and show promise. Manpower and Clarice both won during the season, while Corday ran into place money and Peter's Choice, which has since been gelded, has displayed abundant pace. R. Brough has Valsheen, the t oxbridge flllv. in again, looking in tiptop order to start work. Martene is expected in any day to rejoin the active brigade In Brough's stable. , , War Effort, our likely Derby prospect, has developed splendidly, and is still being exercised round the roads. Friesland Retires Although he commenced work on a couple of occasions this season. Friesland was not persevered with, and a few months ago was permanently retired from the race track. He was one of the gamest and best handicap horses trained in Hawera for some time.
