BUYING PLAN

IMPORTED GOODS

NEW COMPANY FORMED

In future all orders for machine tools, most types of machinery and hardware and certain electrical goods will be co-ordinated by a non-profit body set up by the importers. Purchases will then be made by the New Zealand Ministry of Supply as Government purchases through the company, which will be known as Consolidated Importeis (N.Z.), Ltd. When the goods are received in the Dominion they will be handed over to the co-ordinating company, which will distribute them among its members.

This matter has been under discussion between the merchants concerned and the Ministry of Supply for some time. The change in the method of ordering from overseas is essential, but the new procedure is expected to ensure the least possible disturbance of the flow of goods through their usual channels. Of necessity; in the main, orders will be placed overseas by the Ministry of Supply as Government purchases, but provision is also made for merchants to yjlace orders direct with manufacturers whenever goods can be so obtained in complete satisfaction of the requirements of the Dominion. These orders will in the first place be submitted to the company who will hold the license and arrange the measure of support required from the Government of New Zealand to the Government of the country of origin. Committees representative of all interests have been set up in all the main centres. These committees have elected from their own number representatives who will become directors of the company, which is set up mainly for the dual purpose of consolidating orders and controlling the distribution of goods on arrival. All persons or firms entitled to import goods under the headings specified must submit to the offices of the company within 14 days written notification of their intention to participate in the scheme of consolidated buying. The basis of qualification will be substantially the amount of 1939 import licenses.
