INCREASED HAZARDS
Cause Of Sharp Rise In Wartime Marine Surcharge RATES IN AMERICA Rec. noon. NEW YORK, July 16. Reflecting the increased hazards of navigation, underwriters have raised considerably the wartime marine surcharge rates. The most extensive increase is for voyages confined to the Western Hemisphere, where the rates have trebled, while the rates for shipments to Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, India and Ceylon have doubled, from i to i per cent The wartime marine surcharge must not be confused with the war risk insurance. The latter covers war risks proper, such as mines, torpedoes and capture, while the former covers hazards due to travelling without lights and peace-time navigation aid, etc.
