WEALTH FOR THE WEALTHY
While the Government are urging children and others to contribute their pennies toward the war effort, it seems fantastic that they (the Government) should be making gifts to the wealthy, to the value of £750,000. in the form of universal superannuation. Many of the recipients of this benefit are retired professional and business men, who are really well-to-do; and in verv few cases is the payment of the benefit necessary, as practicallv all necessitious cases are provided for by the Age Benefit. Next year the total payable to these people will reach £875.000. and the following year, an even million pounds—if the Government have not the wisdom, or the courage, to discontinue the scheme—will be paid, while boys and girls from 16 years are taxed 2/6 in the £ on their modest wages to help contribute toward these wealthy beneficiaries. Could not these huge sums be used to better advantage in fighting our enemies? PATRIOS.
