BASEBALL AND BOXING
YANKEES FOUR WINS ON END NEW YORK, July 16. Baseball matches resulted:—Pirates beat Giants, 6—2; Yankees beat Indians, 4—o, the former side scoring its fourth successive victory; Reds and Braves divided the honours in a double-header, Reds winning 6—2 and losing 7—2. In last week-end contests Dodgers beat Pirates s—l, pitcher Whitlow Wyatt scoring his 10th victory of the season. Philadelphia beat Reds, 2—l. Pitcher Rube Melton hit a home run with a man on base in the fifth innings. Yankees shut out Tigers, 3—o. Pitcher Hank Borowy allowed two hits for his eighth triumph of the season. Tommy Hearich scored a home run with a man on base. Cubs beat Giants, 3—o. Pitcher Lefty Vern allowed Giants 11 scattered hits and Cubs bunched eight hits. Browns beat Red Sox, 3—2, behind Johnny Niggeling's seven-hit pitching. Lou Finney and Tom Judd scored home runs for Red Sox. Cardinals beat Braves, 7—5, when Stan Musial hit a home run In the 11th innings with two out and a man on base. An X-ray revealed that the Yankee catcher, Bill Dickey, suffered a torn shoulder ligament when reaching for a foul ball in the game against Tigers, and consequently will be out of action for at least ten days.
The National Boxing Association has rated Private Billy Conn No. 1 heavyweight challenger, with Bob Pastor second and Lee Savoldi third.
