STOLE MOTOR CYCLE
MAORI SENT TO PRISON
"Apparently the lenient treatment you have been given in the past has not been appreciated," said Mr. J. Morling, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, to Charles Howard, a Maori aged 27, who pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a motor cycle valued at £35 on July 8.
Detective-Sergeant Trethewev said Howard took the motor cycle" from High Street and offered it for sale to a garage proprietor the same day for £15. Howard asked for £5 to be paid and said he would return the next day for the balance, when he would also produce the certificate of registration. However, no sale was effected and the motor cycle had been recovered.
"Howard was discharged from prison only a few weeks before this offence was committed,"' added Mr. Trethewev. "He has a list of previous convictions and it looks as though he is developing into a bad thief."
Howard, who had nothing to say. was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
