SOLDIER FOR SENTENCE

A verdict of guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy was given by the jury in the trial at the Supreme Court yesterday of Andrew Frederick George Cogle, a soldier, aged 41 (Mr. Aekins). who was charged with the theft of a diamond ring from Sheffield Silversmiths, Ltd.

Evidence was given that he accompanied another soldier to a jeweller's shop, where the latter was choosing a ring, and when the attendant's back was turned took the ring and left the shop. Accused is a returned soldier, and the recommendation to mercy was based on his physical weakness. At the conclusion of the trial the prisoner pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted rape and was remanded for sentence.
