SERVICE AND INCOME TAX
My son has received some good news. Believe it or not, but he has been elevated to the mighty ranks of an income tax payer. Great news, what! But still, being only a "pore iggerant sailor," he is not, as other service men, entitled to be exempted; or, I should say that, joining for 12 years only and not the duration, he is making it a career; thus he is not entitled to an exemption, so they told him. Then, again, being long service, he is not doing so much towards winning the war as all the "hostilities only" men are. He is not entitled to an exemption! He gets such large pay (?) that he should have some of it taken by our Government. He must buy a new uniform within the next few months, but (note the but), having received this little note "appealing" to the patriotic side of his nature to pay up and look big, the suit will have to wait until next year, and he will have to stay on board because he has not got a decent suit to wear ashore, or else he will have to borrow one. So he does not suppose for one moment that he will be ashore again until next year. He can see now that his big mistake was in not joining the air force. But still, having done over eight years in this Service, he supposes he is of some use to them. Meanwhile he has to earn his salary, or is it income, or a mere pittance? MRS. A.B.
