RETURNS MAY

Customs dnty collected by the Customs Depar'nent in Auckland last month amounted to £216,072, a decrease of £21,474 compared with May of last year wher the duty amounted to £237,546. Other collections last month showed an increase as follows (the figures for the corresing period last year being in parentheses):—Beer excise, £29,239 (£23,474); sales tax, £110,826 (£104,247); War Expenses Account, £170,916 (£119,599). The figures for the first five months of this year as compared with those of last year are:—Customs, £1,003,505 (£1,173,314); beer excise, £146,930 (£135,324); sales tax, £485,560 (£464.475); War Expenses Account, £600,753 (£540,6891.
