KING'S VETERANS
OLD SOLDIERS GATHER ANNUAL EMPIRE DINNER War memories of many campaigns in different parts of the world were recalled to-day when the King's Empire Veterans held their annual lunch and reunion at the Waverley Hotel as the guests of Sir Ernest Davis. In the unavoidable absence of Sir Ernest, the Hon. E. R. Davis presided. The senior member of the gathering was Mr. Alfred Pickrell, aged 92, of Brown's Bay, who was still able to read his menu without the aid of spectacles. He found 25 years ago that he could read better without them, he explained. The Hon. E. R. Davis welcomed the gv.ests, and a number of toasts foMowad. In proposing the toast "Empire Veterans, Captain Attwell reviewed the work of the British forces in the present war from the viewpoint of its effect upon native troops from other parts of the Empire. The Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., president of the New Zealand R.S.A., in responding, congratulated the veterans on the martial spirit they still maintained.
