CUSTOMS RETURNS

RECORD SALES TAX COLLECTED Nearly a record sale tax was collected by the Customs Department in Auckland during May. The amount was £110,826, the record having been established ift May, 1940, with £111,807. Other features of the report of revenue collected, are a decreased in customs, a rise in excise of beer, and a substantial rise in the War Expense Account, as compared with figures for the same month last year. Increases are shown in all figures for the first five months tothe end of April, except those relating to Customs duty. Collections for May are as follow, the totals for May, 1941, being shown in parentheses:—Customs, £210,072 (£237.546); excise on beer, £29,239 (£23,474); sales tax, £110,826 (£104,247): War Expenses Account, £170,913 (£119,599). Totals for the first five months of 1942, compared with those for the same period last year are:— Customs, £1,003,505 (£1,173,314); excise on beer, £146.930 (£135,324); sales tax, £455,560 (£464,475); War Expenses Account, £600,753 (£540,689).
