£36,000 TAX "BLISTER" FOR CHAMPION J. LOUIS
NEW YORK, May 30. Heavyweight champion Joe Louis has been given a month to pay 117,000 dollars (£36,562) overdue taxes. Producer Mike Jacobs said yesterday: "Joe wants a fight in June so he can get some money, but he is navlng some trouble getting permission from the Army. He has to get a fight to piy up." When she applied for a divorce last July Mrs. Louis said Joe had a fortune of £800,000 and an income of £78,000. She was granted £62 10/ a month temporary alimony, but the couple Tiecair.e reconciled • a month later. A later cablegram states: "Private Joe Louis will not be permitted to share in the proceeds of a heavy-weight title fight this summer. The army public relations director declared that no authority had been by anyone to assign Louis to a commercial fight. Louis previously believed that he had been permitted to take part in a commercial fight. He has since donated the purses for his last two title fights to the Army and Navy Relief Fund." Another Negro Star A cable message from New York states that Ray Robinson, lOst 41b, became the uncrowned king of world welter-weights by winning a 10-round decision over Marty Servo, lOst 31b.
