HARRY BRIDGES

U.S. Attorney-General Orders Deportment STRONG PROTESTS RAISED Ree. 11 a.m. WASHINGTON, May 22. The Attorney-General. Mr. Francis Biddle, has ordered the Australianborn waterside leader and alleged Communist, Harry Bridges, to be deported to Australia at the Government's expense. Mr. Biddle said his ruling could be taken to the Federal District Court., the Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. A spokesman for Bridges said the appeal would undoubtedly be made. A message from San Francisco reports that Bridges telegraphed the War Production Board chief, Mr. Donald Nelson, stating: "Despite Mr. Biddle's outrageous decision and numerous protests already pouring in from workers, I will do all possible to offset any effect it might have on the production programme and labour management's unity and will urge all workers and unions I can influence to redouble their efforts in speeding up production to win the main fight against the Axis. It is stated in New York that various Congress of Industrial Organisation unions have telegraphed denouncing the deportment as a brutal blow against full-scale national unity as well as a shocking attack on American democracy.
