WHEAT CROPS
INCREASE IN ACREAGE RAIN AFFECTS POSITION <0.C.) CHHISTCHURCH. this dav "Wheat sowings in Canterbury" a~e expected to be seriously affected by the present wet weather. One authority paid that it was quite possible that a lot of land intended for wheat would not now be sown. While I the Government's objective of 300.000 acres for next year's harvest would probably not be achieved, a striking increase in acreage was assured. Some of the land already sown in wheat might have to be resown on account of the seed rotting in the ground. This was legarded as certain with heavy land" Some farmers had already made plans to sow other crops, as they were dubious of spring sowings. There was always the possibilitv of the land becoming too drv ' for germination. The extent to which autumn sowings would be affected would be determined by the weather during the next week. A cessation of the rain. ?nil a few days of dryinc winds, wo';ld enable many farmers to continue with their s,iwinc plans.
