WOKTHEKN HURDLES

KANUI TE PAI THIRD RACING AT ELLERSLfE The weather was overcast when racing began at the Great Northern meeting held at EDerslie to-day. There was a large attendance and the track was in good order. Greek Dancer registered a nice performance to win the First Jervois Handicap, which was run as one race. The Hawke's Bay colt began smartly and followed First Edition into the straight to join issue with him at the half distance. In a dingdong finish Greek Dancer did best to win by a narrow margin. Mihinui, Joy Musk and Blue Fox were hopelessly left at the start and Hunting Princess carried the field along for five when First Edition went past her to lead into the straight by three lengths from Greek Dancer, Lowry Bay and Gay Lally. Marble Fox finished on strongly in the straight to cut Gay Lally out of a place and once again she was unlucky to meet with defeat. She was eighth at the turn for home and was only beaten by a long neck. Hinkler and Elise did best of the others. Favourite Scores The warm favourite, Brandon Hall, led practically all the way to win the Green Lane Steeplechase easily from Selwyn. Only five horses finished, and the issue never appeared to be in doubt over the last mile, as Brandon Hall was galloping freely and jumping fairly well. Brandon Hall led over the double from Sun Boy and Selwyn. Night Hawk and Stokowski being most prominent of the others. Thomond Lad was the first to fall, and going along the back Bronze Emerald was pulled up and Son of the Soil lost his rider. Sun Boy chanced a few fences down the back, and Brandon Hall increased his lead to eight lengths on the hill, where Night Hawk and Stokowski, racing second and third respectively, fell. Brandon Hall had the race won when they turned for home, while Selwyn ran on nicely to take second place 25 lengths ahead of Master Appellant, with Sun Boy a poor fourth. Division Winners The second Jervois Handicap was run in divisions and Silver Note, which was successful on this course a short while back, led all the way to win comfortably from Korotanei. with Prince Rewa third. Actually the race needs little description, as these three horses were in front all the way and at the home turn Xaini Tal and Belle Renarde were challenging with Monmouth doing best of the ethers. Silver Note went on to win nicely from Korotangi. Prince Rewa weakening into third place. Xaini Tal was fourth just clear of Belle Renarde and Waterloo Bridge. Water Vixen whipped round at the start and took no part in the race. Rara Avis showed further improvement in the second division to record his third successive win. He began smartly and followed Willie Pay. Daily Mail and Lord Defoe to the straight entrance. Rara Avis then took command ana was challenged on the rails in the run home by Taku Kara, but he had a bit in reserve and drew awav to win very comfortably. Willie Pay. tiring, was third, while Moderate finished on to be fourth ahead of Lord Defoe, with Borak next. Erndalf's Easy Win The Great Northern Hurdles of ID 12 was won brilliantly by Krndale. a good handicap performer this season, who oniy recently made his debut in a hack hurdles at Egmont. He then finished third to Besiege and Colibri. This afternoon he jumped well, never putting a foot wrong at any stage of the journey, and his rider. M. Caddy, riding splendidly, allowed him to run along nicely in second position until the home turn was reached. He then ran to the earlv pacemaker. Lapidarian. and. taking the !a<t fence in his stride, went on to win casiiv by five lengths from the topweight Streamline, who won the race two years ago and was beaten only a nose last year. Streamline ran an astonishingly good race. Ilr- was in the middle of the lie'd until three furlongs f rom the judge, when I'd lis moved him up smart Iv to be a handy fifth, at the last obstacle. He outstayed Knnui Te Pai in the run home and should soon win a race, kanui To Pai was the favourite and his supporters had no reason at any stage—except a; the finish—to worrv about their investments, as he was always racing in either second or third position, and it was not until half a mile from home that he gave any indication that first position was beyond him. Jenkins was at him then and although he answered to the calls of his rider to take the last fence just behind Hcssketoon in third place he was c'carlv beaten. Lapidarian went out with a big lead in the early stages from Kanui Te Pai and with a round to go was eight lengths clear of Erndaic. with Kanui To Pai. Hcssketoon. B right Idea. 1 reksaw and Kn.ioyinont prominent of the others. The order was much the same along the back, but at the top Hcssketoon moved' up smartly into second place, but he made a bad jump at the last fence and came down hcavilv. slightlv interfering with Kanui te Pai. Lapiuarian at this stage was a beaten horse, having surrendered the 'cad to Erndale. and he was a very tired horse, fourth, well behind the first three. Bright Idea ran a fair race for fifth and Colibri was next. Apart from Ihe mishan to Hessketoon th° only horse to fall was the wellbacked Dividend, which crashed at the seven-furlong post in the first round.
