NORMANDIE FIRE

A BLESSING IX DISGUISE

Rec. 9.30 WASHINGTON, May 28.

The Naval Affairs Committee reported to the Senate that the fire on board the Normandie on February 9, which resulted in her capsizing, was really a blessing in disguise. The report said that if the original intention of converting the liner into a troopship had been carried to completion, 15,000 American soldiers might have been lost at sea on account of the ship's construction: it is well known that a lack of compartmentation causes instability.

The finding of the committee is especially interesting, in view of the navy's decision last week to proceed with the salvaging of the Normar.die.

The committee also cleared RearAdmiral Adolphus Andrews, Commander of the Eastern Seafront, of any responsibility for the Normandie disaster. The Senate then unanimously confirmed Rear-Admiral Andrews' nomination as a ViceAdmiral.
