SUPPLY OF EGGS
MILITARY AND NAVAL NEEDS
STATEMENT BY MINISTER
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday
- The problems facing the Internal Marketing Department in maintaining supplies of eggs for civilian requirements were commented on today by the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclay.
The total number of eggs received in the main centres last week, he said, were as follows:—Auckland, 16,000 dozen; Wellington, 20,000 dozen; Christchureh, 16,000 dozen: Dunedin, 8000 dozen; Napier and Hastings, .'SOOO dozen. Of these a total of 39,500 dozen had been retained for the fulfilment of overseas orders within the Anzac area. Thus almost two-thirds had been shipped overseas for military and naval requirements in that area, leaving only 23,500 dozen to meet all the requirements of our u\yn military forces, hospitals and institutions and civilian needs.
Figures given, said the Minister, shouid remove any doubt as to the ultimate destination of the eggs available from week to week, and he was sure the average civilian in no way expected his supplies to be maintained at any level at the expense of our naval and military requirements. Certain essential civilian requirements for hospitals, institutions, young children and invalids woulu be maintained to the maximum.
