CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

Avondale Plunket.—The annual meeting of the Avondale Plunket Society was held in the bowling pavilion. Nurse Walbran, who is retiring from Plunket work, was the recipient of a dressing table set from past and present committee members and a fine travelling case from the Plunket mothers. Mrs. Darrow, first president of the first Avondale Plunket committee, gave a talk on early Plunket days. The election of officers was as follows: President, Mrs. A. Turley; vice-presidents, Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Bodmin; secretary, Mrs. Everton; assistant-secretary, Mrs. Moore; treasurer, Mrs. Wheeler; committee, Mesdames Mcßride, Campbell, Holt, Robertson, Higgins, Falkner, Browne, and Miss Thomas.

New Women's Club.—At the weekly general meeting, Mrs. V. I. Crowther, in an address on the polyclinic system, said that modern medicine could best be administered scientifically by means of clinics, which should be the health-centres of the community, with a whole-time salaried staff of specialists; that the doctors should be appointed and judged by their peers from an audit of their results, and that it was necessary for all medical men to have economic security and sufficient leisure for reading and research. The general practitioners should have opportunities of visiting such clinics, and aim to become specialists, much of the routine work being delegated to nurses. The practice of genuine preventive medicine was also advocated by the speaker. The president, Mrs. W. B. Darlow, presided. * # * *

St Andrew's Auxiliary.—The third At Home of the St. Andrew's ladies' auxiliary was held in the Fabian Club rooms, the president, Mrs. Shields, presiding. The speaker for the afternoon was Miss G. Bertram, who spoke on "The Channel Isles."
