CARROTS PLENTIFUL POORMAN ORANGES APPEAR Apples sold freely at Government fixed rates at the city markets to-day, and pears were in short supply. The demand for hothouse tomatoes was Improved, but not for poor quality outdoor ones. The market was firm for good quality tree tomatoes, passion fruit and guavas. Mushrooms are now scarce. There was a slight improvement in the demand for extra choice hothouse grapes. The first local poorman oranges maae their appearance and met keen competition. Heavy supplies of cabbages have been selling at low rates. The supply of cauliflowers has been shortened by cold weather. Carrots are still plentiful, for which there was an increased demand. Good supplies of potatoes and onions were sold under steady demand, as also were lettuce, which have been selling at cheap rates. The keen demand for most lines of vegetables at to-day's sales was brought about by the holiday on Monday, during which the market will be closed, while the shops remain open. Tree tomatoes: New black. 9/ to 17/6 case; yellow, 6/ to 11/. Marmalade oranges. 22/ case. Quinces, 13/ case. Grapes: Gros Colman, extra choice. 3/ to 4/3 lb; others, 1/6 to 2/9 lb. Chinese gooseberries, 10/ to 14/ case; cape gooseberries, ad to 9»2d lb; passion fruit. 8 6 to 20/ case; persimmons, 7/ to 11/9 case. Strawberries: Captain Cook, extra choice, 3/8 chip; guavas, 4/ to 10/ case; mushrooms, 2/ to 3/6 lb. Poultry.—At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was very keen. The prices paid were a very sharp rise of about 1 6 a head all round. Selling rates were as follow Cockerels, heavy breeds, prime, 7 6 to 9.6 each, not prime, 5/ up; light breeds, prime 5 6 to 66, not prime, 4/ to 5/. Fat hens: heavy breeds. 5 to 7/. light breeds, 5/; pullets, heavy breeds, best. 7/ to 8 . smaller, 3/; light breeds, best 6/ to 2/. smaller. 2 . Drakes, young, prime. 5/ to 6', smaller. 4/ up. Ducks, young. 5/ up. oid. 5 ; drakes, old. 5/; geese, 6/6; turkey hens, 7/ to 8/; gobblers, 10/ to 15/.
