VEGETABLE CANNING
BRIGHT NORTH LAND PROSPECT (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. The chairman of the Land Settlement Committee, Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P. for Hawke's Bay, has been inspecting land in the Far North, addressing a series of meetings and explaining the functions of the Rehabilitation Board. In an interview, he suggested that the possibilities of vegetable canning were bright in the Far North. He described the fish cannery at Ninety Mile Beach as a gold mine with modern machinery, and said he was inspecting a nearby tract of land with a view to its use for growing vegetables for tinning as part of the rehabilitation scheme. In parts of Hawke's Bay men earned a good living off three acres with a succession of crops for canning.
