GROWING VEGETABLES

SCHEME 13 MEN TO ASSIST

Plans for employing men previously engaged under Scheme 13 to assist, in growing more vegetables for the Auckland district were mentioned by the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, yesterday. In some districts, he said, cultivation had begun. It was proposed, said the Minister, to employ the bulk of the Auckland district men on vegetable growing for the armed forces. Blocks of land were being acquired and cultivation would be under the supervision of the respective Departments. Throughout the Dominion there were now only 1600 men employed under Scheme 13 and 323 of them Were in the Auckland labour administration district. The majority of the men were between 50 and 60 years of age and almost none was able to undertake strenuous work.
