KING'S BIRTHDAY
TIMBER MILLS WORK
SUNDAY OPERATIONS MOOTED
Decisions to continue operations in the timber industry on Kings Birthday, June 1, and also to work an two Sundays to be fixed at a later date in the interests of the Dominion's war effort, were referred to to-day by the national secretary of the Tilnber Workers' Union, Mr. F. Craig, of Auckland.
"I have just received a telegram from the Director of Forestry informing me that all sawmillers have been notified that they are required to work on the King's Birthday, and that the mills must put in at least eight hours' work on that day," said Mr. Craig. "The rates of pay will be double and not treble (time/ The union has consented - to this arrangement as all available timber supplies are needed for war purposes. It has also been suggested and agreed to that the industry should work on two Sundays on the same terms, and the days to be worked will be announced later."
