CITY DRAINAGE
TAMAKI DISTRICT
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PLAN
An inquiry by the Department of Housing Construction as to whether the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board would consider incorporating the Tamaki area in the board's district for drainage purposes, was discussed at the annual meeting of the board this morning. The letter from the Director of Housing Construction. Mr. G. W. Albertson. reminded the board that the Department had purchased over MOO acres of land for State housing in tiie Tamaki area, but owing to lack of sanitary drainage and other services in this area, the Department had had to adopt a policy of first developing suitable blocks in other parts- of the city where these services were available. Alternative Schemes As such serviced blocks had now been acquired and built on, the Depal tment was compelled to reconsider the development of the Tamaki block, and consequently the question of a temporary scheme of sewage disposal i here, pending the construction by ihe board oi their new outfall to I!row it's i.-land. It was stated that there were two alternative schemes of disposal, namely:-—liy pumping the raw sewage through the I'urewa railway tunnel and thence gravitating into the board's outfall sewer in Hobsoti Hay: by discharging the sewage after treatment into the Tamaki Kstuary near Ahu Point.
The director said he was aware that the Tamaki area was not a part of the hoard's district, but it was a .sumed that it could be brought into the district with t le collaboration of the board, in the same way as other housing blocks had been included. A report was submitted by the engineer and secretary, Mr. if. H. Watkins. and on the motion of the chairman. Mr. .1. A. C. Allum. it was decided to refer the matter to the works committee for consideration and report.
