UNWIELDY FIELDS

IMPORTANT DECISION" The programme for the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting on July 4 has been circulated. Included in the programme Is the following announcement: "The club will reduce to within the safety number any field by such means as the stewards see fit. All persons nominating and accepting will be deemed, to have accepted this condition. Owners of horses eliminated will be advised by telegram forthwith after the closing time of acceptances." From this it is evident that the Wellington club has set itself firmly against division races, a stand which will be welcomed by everyone. A BIG DIVIDEND When Rainstorm won the Waikaura Handicap at Oamaru recently she returned a dividend of more than a century on the win machine, and nearly a fifth of a century for a place. Lauder Girl, a three-year-old filly by Wellington Direct from Central Pointer, was the only horse in the big field to carry less money than Rainstorm. A LONG SPELL. Not Out's breakdown is in a suspensory ligament, and he can be counted out for some time, if not for good. He was purchased by his present owners, Messrs. Turrell and Westenra, early in the season, and soon returned his outlay by winning the Stewards' Handicap. Since then, however, he has failed to win a race, but was very unlucky in some of his engagements. THE CHAMPS STABLEMATE Mr. S. J. Newlands, the Wellington owner of The Champ, has purchased Straight Left, a three-year-old geßling by Winning Hit from Competition, a Polazel mare from Rivalry. The newcomer has entered P. J. Reardon's stable. Rivalry was a fair performer, winning up to one mile and a quarter, but Competition never 1 figured under silk.
