¥NIFORM TAX
Federal Plans To Proceed In Spite of State Protests
CHALLENGE ANTICIPATED
Rec. 1.30 p.m. CANBERRA, this day
The uniform income tax hills will be proceeded with in the House of Representatives no matter what the legal opinion any State receives that the measures are not constitutional. This was made clear by the Government spokesman, who added that before it was decided to introduce this taxation the legal aspect was fully examined and satisfaction was expressed by the Federal Government advisers that any challenge could be successfully met.
It was confidently expected that the legislation would pass through the House of Representatives with a substantial majority and through the Senate without any difficulty.
On May 15 the Federal Treasurer, Mr. J. B. Chiffley, introduced a bill designed to bring about uniform taxation. He said the Commonwealth hoped in this way to obtain additional revenue of £12.000,000 to £15,000.000. Under the bill, Mr. Chiffley emphasised the fact that Australian taxpayers would pay only one income tax instead of the many taxes at present operating, and the revenue from particular groups would approximate closely the amount obtained under the present multiple system. Those States which agreed to suspend (heir taxing power would be compensated after the war.
