CONTROL OF LIQUOR
WHAT GOVERNMENT IS DOING
Outlining the steps taken by the Government to reduce the consumption of alcohol and to control the sale of alcoholic liquor, the Minister of Customs, Mr. Nordmeyer, stated in Auckland that there had been a restriction in the importation of spirits and wines to the extent of 50 per cent in value which, he said, meant a greater reduction in quantity. The Minister, who was replving to a deputation from the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Alliance, said also that the sugar supplied to brewers had been cut down by 50 per cent and the proof spirit content of beer 25 per cent. Mr. Nordmeyer explained that the increases in customs and excise duties had resulted in higher nrices, which would diminish consumption.
