AIRMAN PROMOTED

Cabled advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Culpan, of Islington Street, Heine Bay, that their youngest son, lan Duke, has gained his wings in Canada and been promoted to the rank of sergeantpilot. Aged 20 years, Sergeant-Pilot Culpan was educated at the Marist Brothers' and Auckland Grammar Schools and was a keen footballer, having captained teams of both schools in representative matches. He was also a keen yachtsman, having owned and sailed his boats in conjunction with his older brother, Desmond, who is serving in the Fleet Air Arm in Great Britain. Before the war he was in the employ of the Shell Oil Company, Limited.
