GOOD FIELDS

JERVOIS HANDICAP

ACCEPTANCE OF SEVENTY

The acceptance of 17 in the Great Northern Steeplechase and 21 In the Great Northern Hurdles will ensure nice-sized fields lining up at Ellerslie on Saturday next for the big jumping double, but the Cornwall Handicap, with an acceptance of 34. means that provision will have to be made to run that race in two divisions, although it is possible withdrawals may eventually find this unnecessary. Divisions will also be possible in the Members' Handicap, in which 32 horses have been paid up for.

An unusual position has been created by the acceptance of 70 for the Jervois Handicap, and the event will be run as two separate races and provision made to run each of the two in divisions. Such a position has never cropped up previously. All the fancied candidates for the Northerns hold their ground. Kanui Te Pni is the ruling favourite for the Hurdles, and it is unlikelv he will be ousted from that position. It is interesting to note that Streamline has been accepted for in both Hurdles and Steeplechase, but the chances are he will take on the Steeplechase, a race he won last year. With A. K. Ellis in the saddle, he will be well supported. The form shown at Te Rapa to-day will no doubt help to solve the Ellerslie double —at least most race followers are hoping so. The acceptances for the first day are: GREEN LANE STEEPLECHASE of £350. about two mllfs and a half. —De Friend. 12.9: Ruling Star. 11.1: Night Hawk.
