MILITARY SERVICE

INCREASE IX APPEALS (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Recently the Minister of National Service, Mr. Semple, when referring to the Gazette calling up 17,955 men of the 29-31 age group (married men with children) for military service asked for a minimum of appeals, so that the fightin — services could be built up rapidly. Some 1200 appeals have been lodged in the Wellington district, alone, where the total number of men called tip in this ballot was 2187. This is well over 50 per cent. The percentage of appeals against military service has increased with each ballot.

Since the No. 5 Area (Wellington) Manpower Committee was established less than two years ago, it has received more than 10,000 appeals against military service.
