THE "BUHAI"
"J.C." seeks the origin of this name. I claim to be in the position of being able to elucidate what to him is a mystery. Nearer threequarters than half a century ago I frequently made the journey from Waiwera to Warkworth on horseback, passing through a settlement then known as the "Buhai." It was situated on the main North Road about a mile or so north of the Puhoi Bridge, and at the junction of the road to Mahurangi West. This settlement was comprised principally of Bohemians, and I have no doubt that what I have stated could be verified by any of the descendants of these people. Furthermore, what old-time Waitemata yachtsman does not recollect the phrase about "going up the Buhai for a load of postholes?" The word is pronounced 800-eye. PIONEER.
