CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS

SAVINGS AND COSTS

(To The Editor)

Your correspondent "Why Worry" is certainly not living up to her (or his) nom de plume by the tone of the letter she has written. It is obvious that she has never studied that old idiom "a little knowledge is dangerous." Besides meekly obeying- requests from her milkman she has also meekly swallowed a lot of piffle by one who obviously is no authority on the subject about which he imparted his vital information. Her butcher-boy has told her his employer is saving £20 a month by not using greaseproof paper. Does "Why Worry" realise that there are still scores of butchers in Auckland alone who still use greaseproof paper, and have paid up to three times the pre-war price to get it? (when they can). Does she also realise that the Price Tribunal has fixed the general retail price lower than that operating before the war, and that the market prices the butcher pays for his stock are higher. The ultimate handling costs before he receives his meat have also risen considerably. Last but not least, does she realise that employers have paid two general increases in wages besides extra money above award rates paid to hold a good tradesman. Instead of saving £20 a month on greaseproof paper, in fact on anypaper. the price of which has risen steeply, I would be willing to wager that "Why Worry" would find that most butchers are that amount per month out of pocket, if she did possess all the facts. I think she will also fird that most of my remarks will apply to her milkman whom she so meekly obeys—or for that matter any shopkeeper in these times. WIN FIRST THEN WORRY.
