STRUCK CONSTABLE
OFFENCE BY MAORI
SOLDIER IMPRISONED
Another Maori soldier who assaulted a constable, was sent to prison by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court He was Frederick Walters, aged 29, who pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting Constable C. O. Taylor on May 16, and using indecent language. A charge of assaulting the constable so as to cause him actual bodily harm was withdrawn. SubInspector Macnamara said it was at first thought that the constable s jaw had been fractured. Although he received a bad hit on the jaw it was not fractured. Mr. Macnamara added that about 6 p.m. on Saturday last near the Town Hall, Constable Taylor cautioned •Walters for using bad Apparently Walters resented being spoken to, for he began making insulting remarks to the constable, who let it go at that. Walters then walked down Queen Street ana joined a crowd of other Maoris who became hostile. When again to Walters assaulted the constable by hitting him on the jaw and in the eye. Although he had taken liquor accused was not drunk. Walters' excuse was that he clia not remember anything of the incident. He expressed his sorrow for what occurred. For the assault Walters was sentenced to two months imprisonment. For use of the indecent language he was convicted and discharged.
