WAITEMATA COUNTY

STRICTEST ECONOMY URGED

TO MEET EXTRA IMPOSTS

Presenting his report at the annual meeting of the Waitemata County Council to-day, the chairman, Mr. S. Phillips, said that the council had been assessed for £2999 for the Emergency Precautions Organisation and £12.589 for Hospital Board purposes. The increase in the latter levy was £4449, and this, added to the E.P.S. levy, made a total of £7448, which, if no relief was given it. the council would have to find out of county funds during the current financial year. The only alternative to the increase in the rate to meet this extra impost was for riding members to exercise the strictest economy in their expenditure and to limit it purely to essential maintenance work.

The rates levied for the year were £62.238, of which £57.334, or 92 per cent, was collected, as against 90.90 per cent for the previous vear. The council's public debt had" been reduced by £11,199 2/5, leaving £223,452 12/9 still to be repaid. No loan moneys were raised during the year.
