TERRIFIED WOMEN

Melbourne Murderer Is Still

At Large

Rec. 3 p.m. MELBOURNE, this day

Fifteen detectives are engaged solely on investigation of the three recent Melbourne murders. They are practically without a clue to help them in the murder of the latest victim, Miss Gladys Hosking, whose age was 40, not 29. They have made little progress in the first two crimes. The knowledge that the murderer is at large in the darkened city is terrifying Melbourne women. There has been a marked absence of women and girls about the streets at night. Girls are leaving night shift jobs when they have to walk home alone. Some employees are applying for special petrol rations to drive parties of girls home. Special police are being stationed on all nignt trams to escort women travellers. Additional military provost patrols are being sent out to assist the police patrols. A city caie with a big night trade is adding a dormitory so that night waitresses can sleep on the premises. The strongest force of police ever assigned to a murder investigation in Victoria is searching for the murderer. They are being assisted by scientific experts and black trackers.
