GALLANTRY AWARD

His Majesty the King has granted the British Empire Medal for gallantry to Able-Seaman W. M. Armstrong, according to advice received by his wife, Mrs. W. M. Armstrong, of 248, Mount Albert Road. A few days recently, Mrs. Armstrong received a cablegram to that her husband was safe in England. This followed an announcement by the Admiralty that H.M.S. Gurkha, the ship on which Able-Seaman Armstrong was serving, had been sunk by enemy action.

Shortly after the outbreak of war, Able-Seaman Armstrong joined up as a gunner on a merchant vessel at Auckland. Well known in hockey circles, he gained Auckland representative honours in 1937-38-39.
