"ON YON POWDER"
JUST WHEAT FLOUR
A London firm's food substitute known as "Onyon Powder." was the subject of a prosecution under the Food and Drugs Act at Carlisle.
Three packets of the powder, priced at 6d. each, were bought by Cumberland police in a village grocery shop. The public analyst certified that it consisted of 100 per cent, wheat flour. On the packet it was stated that the powder was "equal to the most concentrated extract of onions in powder form and is equal to that of ten onions."
The police summoned the owner of the store, who summoned the firm of wholesale suppliers, Foster and Short, of Scotch Street, Carlisle.
They in turn summoned the manufactureres, Astralux Electrical Industries, Ltd., of Orcid Road, London, N. 14. There was no appearance in court for the London firm, and it was stated that the managing-director was on active service, and the firm had ceased to exist. Decision was deferred.
