"MUST CEASE"
WATERFRONT THEFTS
WARNING BY MAGISTRATE
"Any interference at all with droppings and spillings must cease," declared Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M.. in the Police Court this morning when imposing a fine of £3 on each of two charges of theft against Joseph Gordon Carrie, a waterside worker. Carrie, aged 45 years, pleaded guilty to stealing a total of three pounds of tea from the Shaw Savill and Albion Company.
The magistrate stated that similar cases in future would be punished with a term of imprisonment.
Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said accused was searched while leaving the wharf and two pounds of tea were found in his pockets. His home was searched and a third pound of tea was discovered. The total value was 10/6. Accused had not been in trouble before, and had worked on the waterfront for 20 years.
Mr. Aekins said accused gathered the tea from the floor, where trucks were running over it. It was not the usual type of pillage.
