TYRE CONSERVATION
EFFECT IN NORTHLAND
(0.C.) WHANG AREI, this day. With limited rail services Northland was dependent more than most parts of New Zealand on road transport and would feel the tyre shortage more acutely, said the chairman. Mr. S. Ralls, in presiding at a meeting of the Northland Licensed Transport Operators' Association last, night to consider methods of effecting economies on present tyre consumption. It was estimated that in a vear over 70 per cent of traffic would be off the road.
Mr. Ralls said that permits for obtaining essential tyres were obtainable. but the difliculty was to find tyres. The Ministry of Transport had approved of the conservation scheme drawn up by the executive. This included 'the appointment of a tyre controller, the distribution of propaganda stickers, pooling of stock and collection. It was emphasised that the driver's job would last as long as his tyres. A committee comprising Messrs .1 Beeston. L. Sirl. H. Webb and S. Lovatt was appointed.
