DELAYED SHIP'S CARGO.
IMPORT UCENSE ADJUSTMENT
A ship from Xew York, which under the exigencies of war did not arrive in Xew Zealand until after the time aet for the expiry of second period licenses, has been the subject of correspondence between the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Xash. In a letter to the chamber from the Minister dated jesterday Mr. Xash said he had given further thought to the matter.
"Upon a review of all the circum- ■ stances and in the light of the representations which have been made to me as to the hardship which has been caused to importers as a result of the original decision, it has now been decided to modify the procedure previously laid down in so far as it affects poods" loaded on the vessel at New York," said the letter. "Where, such goods have been endorsed against the third or fourth period licenses held bv an importer, a special fourth period "license wiH be issued to the value of goods so endorsed if the importer considers that the balance remaining on his existing licenses is insufficient to cover his requirements for the remainder of 1940. lu other cases where an imjwrter heM no license in respect of the third or fourth period under which the goods could be entered and a special fourth period license has accordingly been issued to cover the jmods on condition that the amount involved would be deducted from the importers' allocation for the fifth or a subsequent period, the license will not now be regarded a* a charge against the allocation for a later period. Importers who are affected should make application accordingly to the Customs Department.*'
